Sinusitis: Its Sign and Symptom, Home Remedies, Prevention and Control

Sinusitis, is the inflammation or swelling of the paranasal air-sinuses. Paranasal air-sinuses are hollow pockets within the bones surrounding the nose, which are essential for voice resonance and filtering and adding moisture to any air that is inhaled through nasal passages. Sinusitis problem is now-a-days as common as common cold. This attack of sinusitis may be acute, sub-acute, chronic or recurrent. Whenever Sinusitis is acute it may last for 2-3 weeks, if it is of 4-12 weeks then it is called sub-acute. When sinusitis persists more than 12 weeks, you may say it is chronic.

A Sinusitis pain may be confused with pain of dental origin.

Sinus Attack- Where Sinusitis Pain Occurs Mostly:

  1. Pain in the forehead.
  2. Pain between the eyes, eyebrows.
  3. Pain in the upper jaw.
  4. Pain around the tooth roots.
  5. Pain at the root of the nose.

 The Nature of Pain:

  • In maxillary sinusitis, you may suffer from a throbbing pain in the cheek with radiation towards the eye, but there is never any swelling of the face.
  • The teeth may be tender to percussion.
  • The pain is aggravated by bending forward or lying down.

Sinus Blockage by Following Conditions Leading to Sinusitis:

  • Allergic rhinitis- swelling or inflammation of the lining of the nose.
  • Common cold.

  • Spicy foods like hot peppers, horseradish, wasabi, mustard help to open nasal passage.
  • By taking proper rest, body immunity improves and sinusitis can be managed by own body mechanism.
  • Warm compression to face helps to relieve pain of sinusitis.

  • Try to use humidifier if your home environment is dry.

How to know (Diagnosis):

  • Pressing over face will make you pain.
  • Tapping your teeth causing discomfort.
  • X-Ray of maxillary air sinuses showing – Opacification of maxillary air sinuses on both sides and one side indicative of sinusitis.

Treatment guideline:

  • Nasal decongestant like- AFRIN, RYNEX, ANTAZOL, RHINOZOL helps to remove nasal decongestion. But frequent use of nasal decongestant may cause rebound congestion. So, it should be used according to doctor’s advice.
  • Saline nasal wash.
  • Antibiotics should be used according to doctor’s advice; otherwise antibiotic resistance may develop which is a grave complication.
  • Antihistamine helps to reduce allergy and improve condition.
  • If sinusitis cannot be cured by antibiotics and other medications then surgery is the option- Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.

Sinusitis should be treated, otherwise it may lead to complications such as – Meningitis, Brain Abscess and Infection of Bones.
